Methodology Audit
Reading the 6-axis audit
In plain words: six questions you ask of every story, each with its own confidence reading.
Who, what, when, where, why and how, each with its own confidence.
The 6-axis audit breaks one record into six questions. Each answer carries a confidence reading from 0 to 100 and a mark if it is contested between sources.
- Who: the actors named and who attributes the action to whom.
- What: the event itself, in the least loaded terms available.
- When: the timing and sequence. Sequence is often the most disputed axis.
- Where: the place, and how precisely sources locate it.
- Why: stated motive. This is usually the lowest-confidence axis and is shown as framing, not fact.
- How: the mechanism or means, and how far it is confirmed.
A record can be solid on what and weak on why. The audit exists so that the weak axis is visible instead of being averaged away.
