Citation and reading list

Students and researchers need to practise separating origin from repetition, and to cite what they used. The record gives them something concrete to examine.

Two words used on this page

Origin. The first report of a claim. Repeat. A report that only relays another. 7Analytica marks each one, so many repeats are not mistaken for many confirmations.

01 Instrument

A claim, and everything that cites it.

Choose a node in the graph to read its chain. Add records to the reading list and the citations are written out for you.

Source criticism is usually taught with static examples. Learners rarely see how a claim moves between outlets, or how reliability is estimated and revised.

Sample day

  1. 09:00 Pick a claim. Start from a dispatch and its reference number, which stays the same however the record is cited. Record: Claim opened.
  2. 10:30 Trace the chain. Follow the chain of custody from the first appearance to the latest repeat. Students mark which reports add something and which relay. Record: Chain of 11 reports read.
  3. 13:00 Compare framings. The same event as described across eight media zones, side by side, with the departures marked. Record: Framing compared, 8 zones.
  4. 15:00 Read a source profile. Reliability rests on a sample of reviewed claims. The profile lists the sample, corrections made and the date of last review. Record: Source profile read.
  5. 16:30 Build a reading list. Records are collected with notes beside them. Notes never alter the record. Record: 5 records added with notes.
  6. 17:45 Cite what was used. Cite the record by its reference number and the sealed time. The sealed record does not move under the citation. Record: Citations written, local time.

Teaching from a static example

  1. A worked case from years ago, pasted in a slide
